Maintenance of the cylinder locks

Like any mechanical thing, a cylinder lock also needs maintenance. What exactly does that look like? How do you keep your cylinder in good condition?

First of all, it is useful to know what a cylinder lock is made of. In the past, cylinder locks were made of brass. Brass is easy to work with and is also well protected against all weather influences. The keys were also made of brass, so the locks lasted a very long time without too much maintenance.

Because brass is very soft and a steel drill flows through the brass like 'a hot knife through butter', good locks have not been made from brass for years. Today the housing of a cylinder, the key and four of the six catches are made of nickel silver. Nickel silver is a special alloy with the properties of brass, but less easy to drill into.

To protect the cylinder against burglary, the cylinder is provided with various steel catches, pins and pins. All those pins are fantastic against burglary, but they have one disadvantage; steel can rust. The parts are therefore treated against rust.

The steel pawls are a lot harder than the nickel silver key. The advantage of a lock that is harder than the key is that wear mainly occurs in the key, which is easy to replace; You can always order an original key from us. Just like with the train; the wheel is never harder than the track to prevent wear of the track.

By lubricating your lock with lock spray twice a year, you prevent the steel pawls from oxidizing, causing the lock to no longer function properly or the keys to wear out very quickly due to contact with the steel pawls. But why does that have to be done with lock spray? Isn't that also possible with WD-40? Well, that's possible, but lock spray is much better. Lock spray has the same functionalities as WD-40 in a lock; moisture is displaced and thus prevents rust and it is ensured that the key goes in and out smoothly to prevent wear. Lock spray does not stick, so dust and sand do not remain in the lock

From € 100.00 you will now receive a free can of Griffon Lock Spray from us. If you maintain your lock twice a year with this lock spray, the set can easily last twice as long. The lock spray can also be used for all other locks in and around the household, for example for a padlock or an ignition lock.
