It is very important that your door is equipped with the correct size security cylinder. If a cylinder on the outside of the exterior door is too long and is not flush with the security fitting, it can break off. To prevent this, the cylinder should never protrude more than 3mm from the door fitting. This of course does not apply to the inside of the door, but it is visually better to have the cylinder as level as possible with the fitting.
You do this by removing the current cylinder from the door and measuring it. To remove the old cylinder from the lock, loosen the screw that holds the cylinder in place. This screw is located on the front side of the door at the cylinder. It is important that you use a suitable Phillips screwdriver. Turning the screw to the left will release it and allow you to remove it completely from the door.
Now insert the key into the cylinder and turn it slowly. At the same time, pull the key towards you until you can remove the cylinder. In the case of a knob cylinder, do not use a key but perform this operation on the knob side. Because a cylinder has often been in use for years, the screw and/or cylinder may not come loose easily. In this case you can remove the door fittings, which often makes it easier to release the cylinder. If the screw is very tight, you can 'shock' it. You do this by tapping it with the hammer.
If the old cylinder fits well, you can of course order exactly the same size. If this is not the case, you can order the new cylinders longer or shorter. The easiest thing to do is to take the hole where the screw is in as a starting point. You measure from here – on both sides – to the outside of the cylinder.
NB! These can be different lengths.
When measuring a knob cylinder, it is important that you carefully check which side the knob should be placed on. With a knob cylinder you do not need to measure the knob. During the ordering process you can indicate the button side as 'inside'.
In this case you also measure at the end of the door, so where the bolt comes out. You take the center of the lock as a starting point and measure the length to the inside and outside of the door. Don't forget to take the thickness of the door fittings into account.
