What is a knob cylinder and is it safe?

A knob cylinder is a cylinder that you can operate with a button on one side and is simply operated with a key on the other side.

How safe is a knob cylinder?

A knob cylinder is just as safe as a profile cylinder that is operated with a key on both sides. Rotary knob cylinders are available with an SKG** and SKG*** quality mark, with or without a key certificate. The SKG ** or SKG*** quality mark says something about the burglar resistance of the cylinder. You can read more about the SKG quality mark in a previous blog on our site.

A cylinder with a key certificate prevents anyone from having keys copied. Because a key may only be counterfeited upon presentation of the original key certificate, you always know exactly how many keys are in circulation and who has a key to your door.

The cylinders with rotary knob can also always be made keyed alike with other knob cylinders or profile cylinders. This way you only need 1 key for all your locks.

When do you choose a knob cylinder?

A knob cylinder can offer a practical and/or safe solution in several situations;

  • A knob cylinder can be opened easily without the use of a key (with the rotary knob), so that in the event of calamities and emergency situations, such as smoke development, you do not have to look for the key first. Very nice when you have to flee.
  • By providing at least one exterior door with a knob cylinder, you always have a safe escape route. An additional advantage is that the lock is never blocked, because there is a key in the lock on the inside. This way you can never lock yourself out again.
  • The cylinder with a rotary knob on one side is a solution for seniors or people with disabilities. The lock is easy to operate with the rotary knob and in the event of an emergency, informal caregivers can always enter.
  • A rotary knob cylinder is a very practical solution for a consultation room or dressing room. The door can easily be locked and the door can always be opened and locked from the outside with the key.

In which case is it better not to use a knob cylinder?

The ease of use of the rotary knob cylinder should of course never detract from burglary protection.

If a door has a glass surface or there is a window next to the door, it must be fitted with burglar-resistant glass.

A letterbox in the front door is also a point of attention if you want to use a cylinder that can be operated with a button. If the letterbox in the front door offers the possibility to open the cylinder from the outside, you can fit it with a letterbox protector.

In short, in almost all cases it is possible to use this user-friendly cylinder, but always remain critical with regard to burglary safety. Don't you always want to keep uninvited guests out?

What should you pay attention to when ordering knob cylinders?

With our selection aid you can easily order the right custom (knob) cylinders.

When ordering knob cylinders, it is important that you clearly indicate which side the knob should be placed on.

The 'inside' size is the side where the button is mounted. To properly measure a cylinder, it is often best to remove it from the lock and then measure the length. A cylinder with button operation is slightly higher in price compared to a profile cylinder, but the benefits are well worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which cylinder lock do I need?

An SKG 3*** cylinder lock is the safest because this cylinder is equipped with core pulling protection. If the security fittings on your exterior door are equipped with core pulling protection, an SKG 2** cylinder will suffice. You can recognize the core pull protection in the door fittings by the rotating disc in front of the keyhole. If your front or back door fittings do not have core pulling protection, you can easily solve this by installing an SKG 3*** cylinder. In this way, the lock complies with current security standards to significantly reduce the risk of burglary.

What is a knob cylinder?

A knob cylinder is actually the same as a normal cylinder, except that the cylinder has a knob on one side instead of a keyhole. This way you can always easily lock or open your door without needing a key. Knob cylinders are therefore often used in emergency and escape doors. It is a simple solution to ensure that a door meets the requirements of the fire brigade.

You can also never accidentally leave a key on the inside, which means you can no longer operate the cylinder from the outside. According to the requirements of the PKVW (Police Quality Mark for Safe Living), a knob cylinder may not be used in a facade element with non-SKG-approved glass. Otherwise it will be too easy to break a window and open the door. In practice, modern HR glass is not often smashed compared to the single glass of the past, but it is still something to take into account.

What is an SKG-certified cylinder lock?

An SKG 2 star or SKG 3 star certified cylinder lock is equipped with a key that cannot be easily copied. You can only have the keys counterfeited upon presentation of the certificate. The advantage of this is that you can safely give your key to your employees or to your neighbors or your daughter's boyfriend. They cannot have the key counterfeited without your knowledge.

We always work with small systems, so that the key cannot be copied after a few years. This is the case with major brands such as Nemef and Lips.

How do I measure a cylinder lock?

The size of a cylinder is expressed in millimeters. It is actually the length of the cylinder divided into two with the screw hole in the middle in steps of five millimeters with a minimum length of 30/30: or 60 millimeters. If the door is four centimeters, the cylinder is automatically 60 millimeters long, so the cylinder protrudes ten millimeters on both sides. This is for the fitting that is still on the door.

From the basic size of 30/30, the cylinder can always be five millimeters longer on one side. A commonly sold size, for example, is 30/45, this size is used on new-build doors that are thickened by fifteen millimeters on one side.
