When should I replace my door locks?

Is it time to replace your (cylinder) locks? Take action in the following situations:

  • You have lost your keys.
  • Your lock is broken and/or not working properly.
  • You have recently moved.
  • You want to replace your current locks with certified or keyed alike locks.
  • You want to increase the security of your home or business premises.

I lost my keys

If you have lost your keys, it is wise to install a new cylinder lock. With a new cylinder you can be sure that unwanted visitors (with a key) will stay out.

My lock is not working properly

If your lock is not working properly, this may be due to the cylinder lock. A defective mortise lock can also be the cause. A mortise lock is always used in combination with a cylinder lock. To remedy a defect, it is important to know which lock is not working properly.

  • What is a mortise lock?
A mortise lock is the metal box that is placed in the milled space of the door. When the door is closed, you cannot see the mortise lock. When the door is open, you will see that the mortise lock is flush with the door at the end. When you turn the key, the bolt moves in or out.

  • What is a cylinder lock?
A cylinder lock is always required to operate a mortise lock. We also call this a profile cylinder. The cylinder is placed through the door and the mortise lock, so that you can open and lock the door from the inside and outside. The keyhole of the cylinder is therefore always visible on the inside and/or outside of the closed door.

To check where the defect is, it is best to remove the cylinder and see if it turns smoothly with the key inserted. If the cylinder works properly, the mortise lock probably needs to be replaced. You can remove this from the door and replace it with a new lock.

It is important that you measure the existing lock properly so that the new mortise lock can be replaced without any cutting or breaking work. If your door cylinder lock is broken, you can replace it with a new cylinder lock of the same size.

I have moved, do I need to replace my cylinder locks?

In the event of a move, we always recommend replacing the cylinder locks of the new home or business premises. This advice also applies to certified locks. With new locks you can be sure that there are no keys that you are unaware of.

If you do replace the cylinders, you can immediately take a critical look at the burglary safety of your building. We recommend securing your property in accordance with the standards of the Police Quality Mark for Safe Living.

I want to replace my cylinder locks with certified or keyed alike locks

Replacing your cylinders with certified or keyed alike cylinders is very simple. You measure the current cylinder locks and in our online store you order the same size with certificate and/or as a keyed alike lock. Then you only need to replace the existing cylinders with new cylinder locks of the same size.

Are new cylinders safer?

New cylinder locks are not necessarily safer. There are several ways to better strengthen your locks. According to the current standards of the Police Quality Mark for Safe Living, a lock must always be equipped with core pulling protection . Is this not the case with you? Then you can solve this by installing an SKG 3-star security cylinder .

Certified cylinders offer an extra bit of safety. With a certified cylinder it is not possible to copy the key without the security certificate. Ideal if several people have the key to your home or business premises.
